As news of Haiti's devastation pours in, the scale of destruction from Tuesday's earthquake is truly horrifying. Port-au-Prince, the capital city and home to more than 2 million people, lies in ruins.

Latest reports site between 45,000 and 50,000 people have been killed and as many as 3 million people injured or made homeless.

Right now, the International Rescue Committee has deployed its Emergency Response team to help earthquake survivors. Our first priority is to rush medical, water, and sanitation support to local relief groups in Haiti, who are overwhelmed by the scale of this catastrophe.

Your support is urgently needed to help us rescue lives in Haiti. Please donate now. Immediate funding needs to support our response are $1.5 million.

The poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is especially unprepared to cope with a disaster of this proportion. The next few days will be critical, as we seek to help hundreds of thousands of displaced families.

Your donation now will go directly to aiding the quake's survivors. Please make an emergency gift today.

The IRC has more than 75 years of expertise in emergency response. Our specialists are veteran first-responders who have quickly set up effective emergency programs around the world during violent conflicts and natural disasters, ranging from the 2008 cyclone in Myanmar to the South Asian tsunami in 2004.

Our thoughts and wishes are with the Haitian people struggling desperately to cope in the midst of this tragedy.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
George Rupp
President, International Rescue Committee

P.S. The IRC takes enormous pride in the effectiveness of work, as well as the efficiency with which we do it. 90 cents of every dollar we spend goes directly to help people fleeing conflict or natural disaster.

IRC Deploys Emergency Team to Haitian Capital Devastated by Quake
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti 18 Jan 2010 -

The International Rescue Committee’s Emergency Response Team is on the ground in Haiti, joining other rescue workers delivering aid to hundreds of thousands of Haitians in desperate need of food, clean water and shelter.

On Sunday, the team visited 13 sites in the battered city of Port-au-Prince to assess damage and determine where to deliver humanitarian assistance.

Team leader Gillian Dunn said that damage to the city was “enormous and overwhelming,” with nearly every building badly damaged.

Dunn said dead bodies were still being pulled from the rubble even as search and rescue teams worked feverishly to find anyone still living.  No one knows how many people have been killed, though some estimates number the dead at 150,000 to 200,000.

Six days after a devastating earthquake struck this island nation, tens of thousands of people are still living outdoors with little access to food or shelter.

“People are gathering in any public space, including parks and the sides of roads, and setting up makeshift tents using bed sheets and rope,” Dunn said. “At dusk, families place cinder blocks in the road to prevent traffic from coming through, then they their lay bed sheets down so they can sleep.”

Over the next few days, the IRC's emergency team will be looking at the urgent and unmet needs of homeless families in Port-au-Prince and putting in place plans to provide clean water and sanitation, which are critical to preventing disease in the aftermath of the quake.

We are also deploying experts who will be addressing the special needs of traumatized children and women.   Haitian women, who already suffer from deep poverty and inequality, have been especially hard hit by the disaster.

Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to help the International Rescue Committee rescue lives.
